The NSS Unit of GDC Qazigund along with Department of Environmental Science of the college organized a programme to celebrate the International Day for Biodiversity (IBD) for raising awareness about the importance of biodiversity. The programme was attended by students, faculty, and staff. The programme commenced with an introduction by the Principal, Prof. G.R.Verma, who highlighted the significance of Biodiversity Day. He explained that this day is dedicated to recognizing the variety and variability of life on our planet and the interdependence of all living organisms. The Principal emphasized the importance of flora and fauna, underscoring the critical role they play in maintaining ecological balance. A significant part of his speech focused on the use of pesticides and their adverse effects on both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. He stressed upon the importance of minimizing pesticide use to protect biodiversity. Following the Principal's address, a speech was delivered by Prof. Showkat Ahmad Malik, (NSS Programme Officer and HoD, Education), who focused on the biodiversity with special reference to Jammu and Kashmir. He spoke about the region's unique endemic species and the importance of their conservation. Later, Prof. Rameez Ahmad Shah,( HoD Environmental Science), took the stage. He delivered a compelling speech about the importance of biodiversity, aligning his message with this year's theme, "Be Part of the Plan." Prof. Shah emphasizes the need for a collective and coordinated approach to address the importance, values, and mitigative measures to curb the loss of biodiversity. Following the speeches, a cleanliness drive around the campus was organized. Prof. Nehad Kaniz Fatima (HoD English) underscored the vital importance of campus cleanliness and sanitation in preserving the biodiversity of our surroundings. She urged students to conscientiously utilize campus dustbins as a crucial step towards this goal. The students participated with fervor, showcasing their commitment to environmental stewardship. They meticulously collected all the plastic waste around the campus, demonstrating a proactive approach to maintaining a clean and healthy environment. The students expressed their determination to be mindful of how they dispose of waste materials in the future, understanding the impact of plastic pollution on biodiversity and the ecosystem.
