World Environment Day

05-06-2024: To commemorate World Environment Day, the NSS unit and the
Department of Environmental Science GDC Qazigund organized an awareness
programme. The programme began with Principal Prof. G.R. Verma’s introductory
remarks. He emphasized the responsibilities of students in environmental
protection, focusing particularly on effective waste disposal mechanisms and
strategies to safeguard against diseases caused by pollution.
Prof. Rameez Ahmad Shah(HoD Environmental Science), addressed this year's
theme, "Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience," highlighting
various environmental summits and current efforts to protect the environment and
prevent further land degradation. An interactive video was also presented,
concentrating on the theme and the necessary measures for its implementation.
Prof. Nehad Kaniz Fatima (HoD English) spoke about the local impacts of climate
change and land degradation on Kashmir, encouraging the youth to engage with
this year's theme focusing on protection of land resources. She also advocated for
"Our Land, Our Future," and for the #GenerationRestoration initiative.
Later, Prof. Showkat, NSS Coordinator and HoD Education, delivered a lucid talk
emotionally charged on the effects of environmental pollution on our surroundings.
He urged NSS volunteers to take small steps in their everyday lives to help
conserve the environment, emphasizing the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and
Recycle. The programme was attended by more than 120 students of the college
and staff members. Dr. Amees presented the vote of thanks and spoke about our
individual responsibilities towards the environment.
The programme also included a signature campaign, and posters on the day's theme
were showcased by students who actively participated and showcased their talents.
An on-the-spot painting competition was held, and certificates were awarded to all
participants. The program successfully motivated students to become more
environmentally aware and committed to protecting the environment from further
harm.
